Rivals spar in spirited duel

Rivals spar in spirited duel
Candidates deliver sharp messages

Former U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie and former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann clashed last night in the last televised debate before the Democratic primary for governor, a substantive and mostly positive encounter that forced both candidates to defend their records.

The candidates used the opportunity of a statewide audience to perfect their campaign themes: Abercrombie as an agent of change who will stand up for people who have no one to stand up for them, Hannemann as a chief executive and a collaborator who can get things done.

The most spirited and revealing exchanges, as in previous debates and forums, came when the candidates were able to question each other.

Abercrombie challenged the former mayor to explain how Honolulu allowed a property reclassification from residential to commercial-industrial that has led to substantially higher property tax bills for about 250 residents.

Hannemann explained that it was the city's real property assessment division that reclassified the properties for uniformity and said it was irresponsible for Abercrombie to suggest that the mayor or City Council had an influence. Acting Mayor Kirk Caldwell and some Council members have proposed measures to help the residents involved.

Hannemann, referring to Abercrombie's lack of executive experience, said the former congressman did not understand how a budget is constructed.

"Once again, it's somebody else's fault," Abercrombie shot back. "And now somebody else has to fix it."

Hannemann questioned how Abercrombie, given the state's budget difficulties, would pay for some of the expanded government programs included in his "A New Day in Hawaii" plan, including a state Department of Early Childhood and a Hawaii Energy Authority.

"It's going to take somebody who understands how you actually do budgeting," Abercrombie said, adding that it is a matter of setting priorities, not about new spending.

Abercrombie asked why Hannemann, after apologizing if he offended anyone with a campaign mailer that asked voters to compare the candidates' birthplaces, wives and education, did not stop the mailers from subsequently being distributed on the neighbor islands.

Hannemann said the mailers had already been placed in bulk mail and could not be recalled. He said he wanted the campaign to move forward and questioned why Abercrombie continued to rehash the issue after he apologized.

"We hope to have a healthy debate on what is before us as opposed to what's behind us," he said.

The 90-minute debate at the Blaisdell Center, sponsored by Hawaii News Now and the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, was before a live

audience evenly stocked with Hannemann and Abercrombie loyalists.

The candidates took questions from a news media panel, the audience and viewers on the Internet. Tannya Joaquin of Hawaii News Now moderated the debate.

Abercrombie said he would revitalize the arts as governor, making them part of the curriculum at public schools.

Hannemann said he would name a work-force czar who would identify areas to diversify the economy and provide more job opportunities so more young people would not leave Hawaii after high school or college.

Both candidates said they would not have allowed teacher furloughs as

governor, and both promised to work with the state Legislature on a settlement to the dispute with native Hawaiians over former crown lands.

Abercrombie said he would consider Hawaii joining a multistate or international lottery if the revenue could be used for public education or the arts.

Hannemann said he opposes a lottery or other forms of gambling and said the state should look first at ways at expanding innovation, high technology and tourism.

Asked why Hannemann appears to be the preferred candidate of the business community, Abercrombie responded, "Perhaps they see a friend who has supported the status quo, business as usual."

Asked what role religion would play in a his administration, Hannemann, a Mormon, said: "This will not be an administration that will take orders from any ecclesiastical order, but at the same time, my religion has been good for me, just like religions throughout the state.

"And I respect the right of everyone to adhere to a higher being."

Abercrombie said he would follow the model of Gov. John Burns, a Catholic who famously let a bill

legalizing abortion to become law without his signature because he did not want to impose his religion on the state.

"I think that any governor holds that same fidelity to the Constitution, particularly to the First Amendment," he said.

Obama goes for your guns again

Dear fellow American He's at it again.
I’ve told you to beware of an Obama sneak attack, and here it comes.
In the face a tough election year, Barack Obama and the anti-gunners are willing to do ANYTHING to infringe upon your right to keep and bear arms.
Right now, Barack Obama has teamed up with liberal special interest groups to use the un-elected bureaucrats in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ban all traditional forms of ammunition .
That’s right, Obama and his cronies are trying to ban ALL your ammo.
By using the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976, they want to ban all hunting, target and self-defense ammo that contains lead, no matter how little .
Make no mistake -- this is gun control at its worst.
Since your actions have stopped their plans to pass ammo and gun bans so far in congress, they're using the old end-run.
Obama and his anti-gun cronies in the EPA know that by banning all but the most expensive ammo, they’ve effectively banned your guns in all but name .
And they’ve certainly destroyed the red-blooded American past time of just plain shooting.
To make matters worse, the anti-gunners are hoping to sneak this attack on our Second Amendment Rights through as a bureaucratic rule change.
They know that when they introduce gun control as legislation that gun owners like you and I have tremendous grassroots power.
The anti-gun lobby knows that is you keep the heat on congress most members of Congress will be afraid of angering gun owners so close to an election.
So they’re simply bypassing the democratic, legislative process all together by counting on bureaucrats in the EPA to do their anti-gun dirty work .
Think this doesn’t apply to you? Think again.
The goal of this rule change is simple: drive the price of ammo through the roof for all but law enforcement and the military.
Virtually all hunting, target and self-defense ammo has some lead components.
They’re trying to disarm us one bullet at a tim e.
But here’s where our opportunity comes: The EPA has opened up a public comment period on this proposed attack on our right to keep and bear arms.
And I want you to join with me in making them rue the day they opened up this can of worms .
I want federal staff members –- who are required by law to seek “public input” into this regulatory change –- to receive an avalanche of “public input” on this issue.
But comments to the Obam-crats at the EPA are not likely to make much difference. After all, they are not up for re-elections.
That's why I am going to take a copy of every single petition and deliver it to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid with a simple message...
If the EPA ban ammunition, gun owners will hold Pelosi, Reid and their Democrat majorities 100% responsible for doing nothing to stop it .
Seriously. I want this to go down in the history books right next to dumping tea in Boston harbor as a moment of public protest over unjust and outrageous government overstepping of authority.
Please take a moment to make your voice heard by the bureaucrats at the EPA... and be a part of this epic battle to save our firearms rights.
Click here to sign the National Association for Gun Rights “Stop Barack’s Bullet Ban” petition against this outrageous sneak attack on our rights .
My staff and I at the National Association for Gun Rights will compile your petitions for public comment and forward them to the EPA as well as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
Once you’ve signed the petition, please consider making a contribution to help the National Association for Gun Rights. $25, $10 or even $5 can help us build our war chest to fight this outrageous battle.
Gun owners like you and me must make our voices heard. The anti-gun special interest groups are trying to ban all hunting, target and self-defense ammo that contains even trace elements of lead .
I know it’s hard to believe, but the anti-gunners in D.C. think they’ve found the perfect way to violate your rights and avoid the tough legislative battles they would need to pass this as a bill.
They’re bypassing the legislative process so that they can achieve their two most important goals: banning guns and protecting their puppet politicians’ reelections .
I’ll be honest: backroom deals and midnight bureaucratic rule changes like this are hard to fight.
Unelected bureaucrats aren’t susceptible to the same kind of grassroots pressure that elected members of Congress are.
But if Pelosi and Reid figure out gun owners will turn on their Democrat majorities in mass, you can bet they will light up the White House phones with demands the EPA back down.
Or they could even do the right thing -- don't bet on it -- and pass emergency legislation to strip the EPA of all power to regulate guns and ammo.
That’s why it’s so important that you click here to sign our petition, RIGHT NOW.
The only way we can stop this ban on all traditional ammo is by making our voices heard LOUD AND CLEAR.
By clicking here, you’ll be making your voice heard not only to the EPA, but also to the Congressional leadership, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi .
My staff will complete and deliver these petitions to maximize their affect.
Unfortunately, we don’t have much time. Federal agencies like the EPA don’t really want to hear from you and me. They’re required by law to accept comments, but they won’t take them a day longer than they’re required.
That’s why it is so important that you click here and sign the National Association for Gun Rights “Stop Barack’s Bullet Ban” petition to the EPA, Senator Harry Reid and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi .
Once you’ve signed the petition, please chip in $5 or $10 to help the National Association for Gun Rights continue to fight the EPA .
Your immediate action is vital to our success. We cannot allow un-elected bureaucrats in the EPA to ban all hunting, target and self-defense ammo which contains even trace elements of lead.
For liberty,

Dudley Brown
Executive Director P.S. The un-elected bureaucrats in the Environmental Protection Agency are trying to use an ancient, arcane law to ban virtually all hunting, target and self-defense ammo.
They’re trying to use a bureaucratic end-run to bypass the legislative process and ban ammo without a single member of Congress casting a single vote.
Click here to sign the National Association for Gun Rights “Stop Barack’s Bullet Ban” petition to the EPA, Senator Harry Reid and Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi .
Once you’ve signed the petition, please chip in $5 or $10 to help the National Association for Gun Rights continue to fight the EPA

Obama vacation site sold to Weinberg scion

President Barack Obama's "Winter White House," the beachfront home in Kailua where the Obamas vacationed in December 2008 and 2009, has been bought by a Maryland company managed by a nephew of Hawaii real estate baron Harry Weinberg.

Glenn Weinberg of Owings Mills, Md., and his wife, Debra, have contributed at least $73,000 over the past decade to fund mostly Democratic politicians.

The approximately 4,900-square-foot Kailua estate, which was built in 2006, was the focus of many media stories when the first family and their entourage visited. It is a five-bedroom, 5-1/2-bath plantation-style home on roughly 27,000 square feet of land and includes swimming beach frontage. Located at 57-A Kailuana Place, the home has a three-car garage and enhanced security features, which was a selling point with Obama's security detail.

The property, which was listed for $7.95 million, changed hands for about $6.9 million, according to listing agent Joel Cavasso, who is with Century 21 Kailua Beach Realty. Similar homes in the neighborhood recently sold for $7.5 million, $7.35 million, $6.83 million and $7.1 million, Cavasso said.

"It was a fair price," he said.

Cavasso refused to disclose information that would violate the buyer's privacy.

"The buyers have never met President Obama, although his interest in the property may have piqued theirs," Cavasso said. "They were not straw buyers."

Cavasso would not confirm buyer names; however, sales documents list the buyer as Paradise Point Estates LLC.

Weinberg is named as manager of Paradise Point Estates LLC on the deed, and the mailing address on the company's state business name registration traces back to his Maryland address. The document also lists the company's agent as Delwyn H.W. Wong, whose brother, Reuben, was Harry Weinberg's longtime attorney. Neither returned a call from the Star-Advertiser.

Glenn Weinberg, vice president of The Cordish Co., a real estate development firm, has continued his family's philanthropic legacy. Weinberg, who did not return a call from the Star-Advertiser, is trustee of the American Jewish World Service and is on several other charitable boards.

His famous uncle, who died in 1990 at the Honolulu home where he had lived since 1968, was once the largest landowner in Hawaii and established the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation in 1959. Glenn Weinberg's father, Nathan, was a longtime trustee of that foundation, which became one of the nation's largest private foundations and annually distributes approximately $100 million to charities primarily located in Maryland, Hawaii, northeastern Pennsylvania, New York, Israel and the former Soviet Union.

According to Federal Election Commission records, Glenn and Debra Weinberg contributed to numerous political campaigns in the last decade. He gave nearly $50,000 to fund politicians ranging from local candidates U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) and U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) to U.S. Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.). Only four of the 23 political committees or politicians funded by Glenn Weinberg from 2000 to 2010 were Republican.

Debra Weinberg, who gave about $23,000 during the same period, supported only Democratic candidates, according to FEC records. While neither funded Obama, Debra Weinberg was a regular contributor to Emily's List, a political action committee that supports pro-choice pro-abortion-rights female candidates. The committee originally endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton for president; however, it switched its support to Obama after the primary.

Despite the sale of the "Winter White House," Cavasso said, "the new owners are hoping that (Obama) will come to visit."

English Premier League / Manchester City cruel to Liverpool and Ekshran Judd

Manchester City face a stern warning to all aspirants to the title of Premier League football, after Liverpool thrashed three straight goals on Sunday in the second phase of the competition.

Gareth Barry made a goal by Manchester City, and then added the Argentine Carlos Tevez scored the two goals the second and third team in the presence of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, the owner of the club.

I miss the efforts of the Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano, who linked in the media between him and Barcelona.

Barry opened the scoring 12 James Milner's pass and before Liverpool dominated the game in the final minutes of the first half.
Tevez has benefited from a pass Micah Richards and elevated head steer the ball past Pepe Reina at the beginning of the second half.

And improve the performance of Liverpool bit is almost a goal by Steven Gerrard before addressing Joe Hart brilliantly to Mhakqtin chances of Fernando Torres and David Njoj.

However, the Manchester City settle the game on 68 minutes when Martin Skrtel blocked player Adam Jones to get owners of the land on a penalty kick, Tevez scored from his second goal and third for his team.

Drew Barrymore bombs in dreadful "Distance

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "going the distance" is, somehow, a wonderful film: It is difficult to imagine any romantic comedy is going wrong in many different ways. It seems almost to be an ongoing contest for the worst scene, a moment, the worst character, most cringe-inducing and most awesomely bad line.

Must be star Drew Barrymore, actress and director is higher than average, they have mixed feelings about this film, which is sure to bomb anyway. And fewer people who see this new line / release from the Warner Brothers when it opens on 27 August, and will be easier to erase the memory each of them.

"Distance" wanted to be on the hook well-suited for the romantic comedy: How can the couple keep a relationship hot while living on opposite sides of the country? But that issue is lost amid the chaos of bad estimate, the bad and the blank masks fees for failing to take lovers seriously.

It was entirely predictable is less than its sins. Perhaps the biggest mistake in the accounts is a potty mouth movie. One expects the bluntness of the Apatow school of comedy too. Hormonally charged, emotionally immature young people say and do all kinds of naughty things. But you bounced back from the toilet humor and platitudes continuing adult film about art is supposed to struggle with the problems of real life. Spraying scenario LaTulippe talk with Jeff foul, nothing more than a pathetic attempt from the flick "chick" to reach younger and more male demographic. Oh, and by the way, did not get to laugh and one that has been created by any of this.

And threw a six-week romance in New York between Irene Barrymore, a student of journalism, and Garrett, Justin Long, executive director of junior record company, and unintended consequences when Irene must return to San Francisco for further study: they are both shocked to find that they and fell in love. Long-term relationship takes its toll. One can not find full-time work in the city of the other. No one believes that the text messaging or Skyping makes a reasonable alternative to connect to the body.

Looking for work in two professions under siege - the press and music - can certainly be a challenge, but no one seems to have heard the word "free." What prevents the transition from Irene to New York to freelance for the media they already foot in the door with a big story in the New York daily?

All other conflicts, the characters in the film is on an equal footing with the flared up: forced Garrett embarrassment experiences when Irene Meeting the family; sister (Christina Applegate) hatred of extremist Garrett; changed by artificial Irene and handsome co-worker, and two best friends (Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis) you do not want your worst enemy.

Barrymore able to maintain their dignity in the worst of all this confusion. Except, of course, this scene in a state of intoxication when the verbal attacks on backward pub. Oh, and with the exception of phone sex between her and long term. Well, come to think of it, it does not sacrifice dignity in a few times, but no more than anyone else in this production is illegal. Nanette Burstein, who is in the background of documentaries, directed
